Here is my dear little Bobby Mack. He came to me at three months old and never really had a parent or older bird to mentor him in the way of bird behaviors.
I introduced a little glass bowl full of water about six months ago and both he and Skye had no idea what to do with it. It indeed was different from their drinkers but what is a birdie to do with all that water? They never had anyone to model a "proper bird bath" to them but miraculously, bit -by- bit, they eased their way into the liquid wake. They dunked their heads first and then turned and dunked their butts. Sometimes they extended a wing into the water but have not as yet immersed their whole bodies.
When they get out they rub their beaks and feathers on this ball of twine and yarn to dry themselves. I am going to put a little square of facecloth beside their bath so they can use it as a towel.
You must be thinking I have too much time on my hands....no I don't...but I find creatures so amazing to observe. I love to add new experiences for them. They are intelligent little beings and you can see their heads turning and their brains whirling as they try to figure things out and find solutions.
I have read that parrotlets may have the intelligence of a two or three year old human child. They listen attentively, hang out on their cage (inside and out) and will go back inside their cage when I tell them they have to go home. I know both are struggling to bring forth some words from deep within them. How fun that will be when I hear actual words coming out of them!!!
Anyhow I keep babbling on. Enjoy your day. Be sure to hug and kiss your pets. Remember to be an observer....no not from Fringe...but of God's magnificent creatures and a provide more than enough care and love for them while they are with you. Blessings.
